Robotics Engineer — Field Autonomy

What the role is responsible for.

• Develop perception, localisation, and planning software for autonomous ground vehicles.
• Own the degraded-conditions behaviour — snow, dust, occlusion, and loss of positioning.
• Lead field trials, including the instrumentation needed to learn anything from them.
• Integrate software with vehicle hardware and diagnose across that boundary.
• Keep the simulation environment honest against measured field performance.

What we need you to bring.

• Six or more years in robotics software, with real outdoor deployment experience.
• Depth in at least two of: perception, state estimation, motion planning, controls.
• Strong C++ and Python, and the debugging skill to work on a vehicle in the field.
• Willingness to spend real time outdoors in poor conditions.
• Full driving licence.

Useful, not essential.

• Experience with lidar-inertial or radar-based localisation in feature-poor terrain.
• Prior work on agricultural, mining, defence, or polar autonomy.
• Familiarity with functional safety for mobile machinery.

We read the preferred list as a description of a useful background, not a checklist. Candidates who meet the required list and none of the preferred are regularly hired.

Field Robotics runs from Helsinki with year-round access to genuinely hostile test conditions, which is why the group is there.

Field trial periods are scheduled in advance and offset by recovery time.
