What the role is responsible for.
- Set the research agenda for alignment, evaluation, and assurance of machine intelligence across the divisions.
- Develop evaluation methods that survive contact with deployed systems rather than benchmarks alone.
- Advise programme leadership on deployment risk, in writing, with reasoning attached.
- Supervise a group of researchers and hold the standard on evidence.
- Work with Ethics & Governance to keep the governance framework technically grounded.
What we need you to bring.
- Doctorate in machine learning, computer science, or a related field, with a substantial independent research record.
- Demonstrated work on evaluation, interpretability, robustness, or assurance of learned systems.
- Ability to lead researchers and to argue a technical position to non-specialist leadership.
- Comfort delivering conclusions that are inconvenient to a programme schedule.
- Eligibility for sponsored vetting to Level 4.
Useful, not essential.
- Experience with systems that take consequential action without human confirmation.
- Background bridging academic research and operational deployment.
- Prior involvement in standards or policy work on autonomous systems.
We read the preferred list as a description of a useful background, not a checklist. Candidates who meet the required list and none of the preferred are regularly hired.
Who you would be joining.
Autonomous Systems is a cross-divisional group rather than a product organisation. It has no delivery deadline of its own, which is deliberate.
What to know before you apply.
Publication is supported where disclosure allows, and the disclosure decision is made by review rather than by default.
All candidates undergo comprehensive vetting. Reasonable accommodation is available at any stage — say so in your first note and it will be arranged. We do not use unverified third-party recruiters, and we never ask a candidate for a fee.
